The first major problem the squad faces is the fact that they are on a glacier. In the middle of the desert. And to get water, they have to go deep underground by foot.
At this point, Agarn decides that this mission is going to be far too dangerous for him. The Covenant are everywhere, and he doesn't want to risk his squad's lives for this water. He tells his squad to abandon the mission and head back to camp, which they do.
Agarn is immediately re-assigned to another mission, this time with a different squad.
