Copperfield was born Arthur William Smith on January 13, 1900 in Nevis, West Indies. He was adopted by British parents, Arthur William Copperfield and Annie Catherine James, who moved to England. His adoptive father, Arthur, worked as a civil servant, and his mother was a homemaker.
Copperfield grew up in a mansion house in Dulwich, South London. He attended Dulwich College, where he boarded along with his brother Herbert.
Copperfield went on to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, receiving his first job as an actor in 1918. He made his stage debut in 1920 in "The Village Coquette." His first film was "The Wicked Lady" (1930), which starred Miriam Hopkins and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. He went on to appear in over 70 films during his career.
Copperfield married actress Lilli Palmer in 1922; they divorced in 1925. The couple had one son, Cyril. His second marriage was to actress Eva St. Clair (whom he wed in 1926), though they were never legally married; they also had one child, Robert.
