Lauren and I met through a mutual friend, and she was looking for a mentor to help guide her career. She was young, just coming out of college, and had no idea how to navigate the world of business. We talked about her career, and I told her about my own career, and within a few months she hired me as her personal coach.
As her "coach," I had to teach her how to be a leader, how to stand up for herself, but also how to listen to others, how to ask for what she needed, how to negotiate with employers, how to form relationships with other people.
Plus, I had to teach her how to be herself. She was an introvert, but she didn't know how to tap into her own introverted nature. I wanted her to be herself, but without being too much of an introvert. That was our challenge.
