Grimsley was born in 1866, the son of cattle ranchers in the American Old West. His mother died when he was five, and he was raised by his father, who gave him the nickname Grim. The nickname stuck with him throughout his life, and he used it whenever he could.
Grimsley was a brilliant student, but he didn’t get along well with teachers, preferring to spend his time alone, thinking about how to improve his inventions.
He got his first taste of fame when he created the first practical harness for horses to pull trains. He later created the first train that ran on rubber tires, which was faster and cheaper than other trains.
He invented a machine that could help farmers harvest their crops more quickly, but the government wouldn’t allow him to commercialize it because it would have put farmers out of business.
