Gropius was the son of architect Adolf von Gropius and his wife, Lily Braun. His father was an early proponent of the Bauhaus and Gropius was a student there from 1906 to 1909, but he left in 1910 because he was dissatisfied with the school's emphasis on craft rather than design. He became a student at the Staatliche Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe, where he studied under Edmund Neuenschwander, and the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich, where he studied under Peter Behrens.
Gropius was a member of the Berlin Secession and started teaching at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1919. He became the director of the Bauhaus in 1922, and remained director until his death in 1969. While at the Bauhaus, Gropius taught architecture and set up the Bauhaus bookshop. He was interested in typography, pioneering the use of sans-serif typefaces for mass printing.
