"Zorro" is a fictional masked avenger from the 19th century who fought against injustice in California. The character was created by author Johnston McCulley and first appeared in the eponymous pulp magazine in 1919. McCulley was inspired by the real-life bandit Joaquín Murrieta, known as "El Zorro de la Frontera", a Mexican bandit who stole horses and cattle from Mexican settlers during the California Gold Rush.
Once learning of this character, Murrieta took a job as a waiter, and later a bouncer, to make extra money. He was fired from both jobs after throwing a drunken patron out of a club. Murrieta then became a bodyguard for a local drug dealer, and eventually began working as a hitman for various people. He eventually became a freelance hitman, and sometimes took on the identities of "Zorro" and "Zorro II". This ultimately led to his involvement in a plot to assassinate the governor of California.
