Kojirō's personality is based on Gintoki Sakata, the protagonist of the manga Hachiōji Katsuhiko. Both characters are cool, yet they are both very compassionate, and both are lazy. Kojirō's personality is also based on Sakata's rival Katsura Kotarō.

Background
Kojirō was born in Edo (present-day Tokyo) on September 23, 1884 to a poor family, but his father died when he was very young, leaving him to his mother, who was already old. He was raised by his grandfather. After becoming a ninja, his grandfather had all his belongings burned by the village elders. Eventually, he gave Kojirō a jeweled fan, which Kojirō still has, and told him he would be back for him one day.
Sasaki Kojirō, was a prominent Japanese swordsman widely considered a master of his craft, born in Fukui Prefecture. He lived during the Azuchi–Momoyama and early Edo periods and is most remembered for his death while battling Miyamoto Musashi in 1612.
