Kaneshiro stated that his interest in art began at an early age. Kaneshiro's first choice of art was animation, but after being rejected twice, he gave up on it. Kaneshiro stated that, "I became interested in drawing when I was in elementary school and in junior high school. I liked manga (comic books) and anime (anime cartoons) because I thought it was interesting to draw characters and make up stories."
Kaneshiro's parents were opposed to his desire to enter the anime industry, and they forced him to attend the Japan Naval Academy after he applied for an art scholarship. Kaneshiro said that, "My father wanted me to enter the navy because he feared it would be too dangerous for me to become an animator. It seemed like a good idea to me at the time.
