Álava is a Spanish word meaning “land of the Álvaras”, or the Álvaras themselves. The Álvaras were a Basque tribe that lived in the mountains of northern Spain and southern France during the
Middle Ages. They were noted for their strength, courage, and skill in combat, and were known to be the best horsemen of their time. The Álvaras were at first well-respected by
the neighboring Christian kingdoms, but later became the subject of maledictions and curses. Despite this, they continued to live on as a nomadic tribe, avoiding conflicts with their neighbors as
they traveled from place to place.
