Earl Stone was born in Theodore, Ohio, the son of a machinist. He graduated from the Ohio Northern University in 1952 with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He married his wife, Margaret, in 1954, and together they had a daughter, Kari Lynn.
In 1964, Earl Stone founded a company called Radio Control Engineering Corporation (RCE). In the same year, he filed for a patent for a design for a television remote control. The patent was issued in 1966.
