Barb Thunderman was a graduate of the University of Kentucky and a member of Delta Zeta sorority (the National Executive Board). She retired from the United States Postal Service after 41 years of service. Until her death in 2014, Barb lived in Louisville, Kentucky, where she continued to host a weekly Italian cooking show on local television. In addition, she served as an active benefactor to the University of Louisville's School of Journalism and Media Studies. Barb was a member of the Piedmont Triad Council, a 100 year old African American sorority. She was a lifelong member of the NAACP.
In 2017, a biography of Barb was published by her daughter, Lisa Washington-Garrett, entitled "The Soulful Soul: A Life in the Church and in the Kitchen".
