Simon Glass is a young child psychiatrist in the practice of Dr. Julia Hoffman in the 1980s. He is the son of medical school dropout and former child psychiatrist, Dr. Abel Glass.
Glass's father disappeared in 1953 and his mother died in a bus crash in 1961, leaving Glass and his brother to be raised by their maternal aunt. Simon grew up with no memories of his father and was estranged from his brother. His father's disappearance and the death of his mother were key events in his life because they made him feel like an outsider; he was not like other children and because he did not know his father he felt he did not belong anywhere.
In 1963, Glass began attending Hill House, a boarding school for children of prominent families in northern Vermont. The school was owned by Mr. Carson, a wealthy philanthropist who provided the school with a large sum of money each year to provide a superior education for his pupils. The school provided a nurturing environment for the students, but according to the other students, Glass did not have many friends.
