He was born in a town called Barry, Wales, and he was raised by his mother and grandparents, who were all involved with the Irish Republican Army. He grew up in a little cabin in the woods, where he learned to be self-reliant. When he was 16, his family moved to New York City, and he settled there. He worked as a waiter, and joined the Air Force as a mechanic.
In this country, he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command and served as a mechanic on B-52s and B-70s.
He ended up in the Air Force Security Service, a branch of the CIA, where he worked with electronic surveillance. He worked with a computer program called “Sig-Sauer”, which was developed for the CIA by the West German firm Sig Sauer. This computer program allowed them to monitor phone calls, faxes, e-mails and radio transmissions of the KGB.
He was part of the CIA’s effort to bug the phones of Soviet leaders Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, and Yuri Andropov.
