He was the third child and second son born to Don Domingo Buendía and Isabel de Villanueva, and was named after his uncle Francisco José Buendía, who died when the boy was only 7 years old.
His father, Domingo Buendía, was a well known Spanish soldier in his time, he fought in the War of the Spanish Succession, where he earned the nickname "El Bueno". After the war, he earned a large amount of money through trading, he became the owner of a fleet of ships, thus earning him the name "El Dorado". He died when José Arcadio was 8 years old.
