The books were published by Random House and were written by Viorst initially under the pseudonym "Anne Fine." The first three books were later made into a television series, which was created by Viorst in collaboration with her daughter, actress Jennifer Love Hewitt.
The first book in the series, "Princess Mink", was published in 1986 by Random House and illustrated by Dan Yaccarino. The title character is a princess who is mistaken for a boy while on a cruise and takes on the disguise of a boy to help other children. The second book, "Princess Mink: The Rescue", was published in 1987 and was also illustrated by Yaccarino. In this story, Mink decides to rescue an older boy who gets lost on a cruise.
