Thoughts on the Marvel Universe
During the excellent discussion of the powers of different Marvel characters, I found myself thinking about how I relate to the Marvel Universe itself.
I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m all about and what makes me tick.
One of the things that I thought about was that I think that Marvel is a little like a fable, and that the characters in it are all archetypes.
The comics themselves are my take on them, they’re my creation. But they also reveal my inner character.
I’m not sure if they’re my creation alone, or if I learned about them from others, but what I think I’m getting at is that these characters can be understood in my mind as archetypes: types that we all have in our unconscious (and probably in our conscious minds as well) and that we can use in our lives to help us understand ourselves and how we relate to the world.
I’m not sure if this is my own idea or if it came from somewhere else.
Green Lantern is the name of several superheroes appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. They fight evil with the aid of rings that grant them a variety of extraordinary powers, all of which come from imagination and/or emotions. The characters are typically depicted as members of the Green Lantern Corps, an interstellar law enforcement agency. The first Green Lantern character, Alan Scott, was created in 1940 by Martin Nodell and Bill Finger during the Golden Age of Comic Books and usually fought common criminals in Capitol City with the aid of his magic ring. For the Silver Age of Comic Books, John Broome and Gil Kane reinvented the character as Hal Jordan in 1959 and shifted the focus of Green Lantern stories from fantasy to science fiction. Other notable Green Lanterns include Guy Gardner, John Stewart, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz, and Jessica Cruz. The Green Lanterns are among DC Comics' longest lasting sets of characters.
