ISTJs are often seen as the staunch "doers", and often they are. They live in the present and do what is necessary to get the job done. They will not waste time with anything that is not helpful to their goal. Their concern for others may seem overbearing to those who don't understand the ISTJ. Their dedication to their task is fantastic, but their ability to understand others is not as good as that of the ESTJ, as it is with the ESFP.
ISTJs are predictable and dependable. They are very loyal to those they care about. They have a strong work ethic, and follow through on what they have committed to do. When they have a goal they set a direction and strive to reach it. If a task is not completed they don't stop working on it, they just do it differently.
