Where we're from, we're taught that we're supposed to take care of each other."
Mendonça is still working on that. This summer, he and his wife had a falling out and decided it was time to part ways. His wife and children moved out and he took over the family home.
"It's nothing against her; it's just that we don't see eye-to-eye anymore," Mendonça told Al Jazeera. "I didn't want to hurt her or the kids."
