    Walden's first job after college was as a reporter with the "New York Herald Tribune" for one year. She then took a job as an assistant to the editor of "Harper's Bazaar" magazine.

    She met her first husband, writer Paul Theroux, while they were both working at "Rolling Stone" magazine. The couple married on September 10, 1961. The marriage ended in divorce on September 8, 1971.

    Her second marriage was on November 21, 1972 to Martin Walden, who died on January 17, 1988. They had two children:

    Walden is currently married to Thomas F. Hagerty (born 1945), the former president of Avis Rent-a-Car and Hertz Gold Plus Rewards®.
