"On the whole, our research strongly suggests that the way you think about yourself matters more than how you actually are," says David C. Holmes, who has studied the subject at the University of California, Berkeley. "Individuals with certain cognitive styles—such as thinking they are very different from others or that they are very similar to others—are more likely to get into conflict with their colleagues."
Holmes says there are two very different kinds of conflict—and he has found that people who think they are different often take on the trait of being different than others, while people who think they are similar often take on the trait of being similar than others.
"People who think they are different than others are more likely to see others as threatening," Holmes says, "and will therefore go to great lengths to keep them out of their personal space."
The opposite is true for people who think they are similar to others. "They will be more likely to come together with others to create something new," Holmes says. "They don't see other people as threatening, and will therefore be more willing to collaborate."
