Spix's Macaw are named after Baron Spix, a zoologist that lived in Brazil. He studied about the behavior of several different species of parrots while he was living in the country. The name "Spix's Macaw" was coined by his friend, Johann Baptist von Spix. Baron Spix helped create the first parrot sanctuary in Brazil, which is located in Belém, Pará.
Spix's macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), also known as the little blue macaw, is a macaw native to Brazil. Currently there are no known survivors of the species outside of captivity.
