Candombe is a style of Uruguayan popular music, created and developed by Montevideo's Afro-Uruguayan population from the 18th century onwards. It is performed by groups of drummers playing a distinctive rhythm.
The instruments used in candombe are three tambores (drums) of different sizes and registers: chico (small/high), repique (medium) and piano (big/low). A candombe ensemble, called cuerda, requires at least one of each type of drum but may have up to sixty performers. Candombe is played all year long but the Uruguayan Carnival is its most important event.
