The Gnawa people serve as a model for many of the smaller peoples of the Sahara and Sahel region. The Gnawa people are often called Berbers, and their language is called Gnawa.
The name Gnawa may derive from the words "Gna," meaning "sing," and "wa," meaning "people," or the word may be the plural form of the name of a river in the region, "Gnawa".
Gnawa people traditionally migrated with their herds along the oases in the Sahara, and would move from oasis to oasis to protect their herds from the harsh climatic conditions and also to harvest water. The Gnawa nomads were traditionally seminomads, moving with their herds from place to place in search of richer pastures and richer grazing areas.
The Gnawa people were historically scattered throughout much of present-day Mauritania and Western Sahara, but they were united in a single community in the region around Ségou, Mali. The Gnawa people today live primarily in Mali and Mauritania, and they have been integrated into the Malian and Mauritanian societies.
Gnawa music (Ar. ڭْناوة or كْناوة) is a body of Moroccan and sub-Saharan African Islamic religious songs and rhythms. Its well-preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. The music is performed at lila, communal nights of celebration dedicated to prayer and healing guided by the Gnawa maalem, or master musician, and their group of musicians and dancers. Though many of the influences that formed this music can be traced to sub-Saharan West-Africa, its traditional practice is concentrated in Morocco. Gnawa music has spread to many other countries in Africa and Europe, such as France.
