Steampunk personality type is ENTP, with a dash of ISTP. [I've been saying ENTP, but for the purposes of this discussion, I'm talking about an ENTP with a dash of ISTP.]
ENTPs are like the Beatles: they are all over the place, but they always seem to land on their feet. They often have a mind like a pinball machine because they bounce from one idea to the next and from one system of thought to another. ENTPs have a brilliant, daring, inventive and often unconventional mind. They live in the future. They may be visionaries, inventors, artists, scientists or dreamers. They are explorers, people who fear nothing and are often involved in extraordinary exploits and escapades. They tend to be liars and cheats, because they tend to see rules as inhibitions and often break them. They are intelligent and witty. They can take risks, risk-takers and innovators who seem to always see new opportunities and fresh challenges in life. ENTPs are defined by their individuality and independence. They are often the first to criticize others and challenge the status quo. They can be rebels against authority and the establishment.
Steampunk music is a genre with a loosely defined sound, but can be described as "eclectic". Common influences include gothic, industrial, synth-pop, dark wave, and new wave, but there are also hints of orchestral, ragtime, cabaret, Indian, gypsy, folk, and traditional klezmer music.
The most important aspect of steampunk music, and perhaps what gives it its label, are the stageshows; bands often mod their equipment to resemble Victorian and Neo-Victorian steampunk equivalents. The band members themselves don period costumes with steampunk accessories.
The instruments used by the performers, while sometimes consisting of the traditional guitar/keyboard/drums trio, is just as eclectic as the sound. Steampunk musicians will often play exotic or unusual instruments, including the cello, accordion, bagpipe, and balalaika.
