In 1999, Rhodes meet his future wife, Joanne. They were married in 2001 and moved to Los Angeles the same year. Joanne encouraged him to try stand-up comedy, but Rhodes was initially nervous about the idea of performing in front of people.
Rhodes started getting stage time at comedy clubs in 2002. He quickly became successful, and in 2003 he opened for Jay Leno on The Tonight Show. He also started making guest appearances on shows such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Saturday Night Live and Caroline's Comedy Hour.
