Sokol was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and moved to Kiev at a young age. Sokol started playing chess at the age of eleven, in 1982. He was a student in the Ukrainian Chess Federation school from 1985 to 1988. From 1988 to 1990 he was a member of the Soviet Junior Team, which won the USSR Junior Chess Championship in 1989 and 1990. In 1990 he left the team after a disagreement with their coach. In 1992 he left the Ukraine and moved to Norway.
In 1993 he joined the Norwegian Chess Federation, playing in Norwegian chess tournaments until 1999. In 1999 he moved to the US where he has been playing chess tournaments since. Sokol played in the US Chess Championship in 1998, 2002 and 2005. He was also a member of the Russian-American team that won the US team championship in 2000 and 2001.
