Refusing to do anything that he doesn't enjoy is a big part of this. A further aspect of this is his stubbornness. Even if he knows that doing something isn't going to be beneficial, he will do it anyway, simply because he can't stand it.
He doesn't like to admit that he's wrong, which is why he will continue doing something he knows isn't going to work. But he doesn't really mean it, and normally he'll quickly realize that he was wrong as soon as he keeps doing it. Unfortunately it can also lead to him getting hurt when he does something without thinking.
So he has to make sure that what he's doing doesn't hurt other people, and he can only do so by making sure it's not dangerous. But even when it IS dangerous, he still won't admit it's a bad idea and will do it anyway.
This is the main reason why Ganryu is so strong, even though he's stupid, stubborn and a bit of a bishonen.
