"These bizarre moons are believed to be captured asteroids. Both were discovered in the same orbit, and both have highly irregular shapes. Phobos is an elongated ellipsoid with a short, moderately thick crust. The satellite is about 3/4 of a kilometer in diameter, or about 1/3 of the average asteroid in this size range, and has an equatorial diameter of about 0.75 kilometers. Phobos is rotating very slowly, with a period of approximately 2 hours. At this rate the moon could complete one revolution every 2.5 million years."
