Allegedly, in the days following Pythagoras birth in 570 BC, his mother, Thea, who was a priestess of the goddess Hera, offered sacrifices in the temple and in her joy and enthusiasm for her new son, she decided to sacrifice a lamb.
As she was preparing to do so, an eagle swooped down and snatched the lamb from her arms. It then deposited the lamb on a ledge above the temple door and flew off. She closed her eyes and prayed to Hera that she would give birth to a great man who would honor the gods and help his fellow men.
