Evan Townshend was born in the city of Ilford, Essex, England, which is located in the London area. He is the youngest of four children of the rock musician and composer, Ray Townshend, and his wife actress Patricia Townshend.
He has one elder brother, Roger, and two elder sisters, Jane and Sarah. His musical career began when he was six years old. At the age of seven, he began his first musical training under his father. At the age of 15, he formed his first band, The Deviants. At the age of 17, he began his first solo career.
