Nermin’s interest in history was unusual for a teenager, though by his own admission he was more of a bookworm than an athlete. He would later study art history at university.
“I always had this rebellious streak in me, but my parents were very supportive of me,” Nermin said. “They had an open mind about everything I did. They were very encouraging.”
His parents still live in Sarajevo, where they own two restaurants. Nermin also has two older brothers who live in Sarajevo. His father is a Muslim, while his mother is not. Nermin said he is the only Muslim in the family.
He was accepted into the University of Sarajevo when he was 15 years old, but his parents persuaded him to continue with his education in the United States. He spent two years at the University of Texas in Austin before returning to Bosnia in 2001 to study at Brown University.
