Anneliese was the daughter of Prince Heinrich, the Prince of Hesse, and Princess Adelheid of Bavaria. She married Prince Anton of Bavaria in 1953, but the marriage was annulled in 1955 after Anton confessed to having an affair with a young aristocrat, Countess Maria von Waldstätten.
Although she received much media attention during her lifetime, Anneliese was never considered a threat to the royal family. She was reportedly an ambitious woman who wanted to use her father's position to promote her own career.
After her divorce from Anton, Anneliese was declared legally dead in 1960. She died in Hildesheim, Germany, in 2006 at the age of 74.
