Shirai's childhood
Shirai first appears during the first episode of "Attack on Titan". He was first seen by Mikasa Ackerman who was scouting for information about Eren Yeager's whereabouts during the attack on Trost District. When Mikasa was about to kill him, he used his ability to control Titan to block her attack, saving his life. Unlike the other Titans, Shirai was able to control his Titan. He then proceeded to attack Mikasa. He was quickly defeated by Eren's Titan free of the control of Grisha.
Shirai was injured by Levi Ackerman, but not fatally. He was shown to be very arrogant about his ability to control Titans.
Shirai was one of the few surviving soldiers at Trost District after the battle ended. After the meeting between the Military Police Brigade and the Eldians, he was sent with other soldiers to recapture Eren Yeager and the Female Titan. Once they arrived at Wall Maria, Shirai revealed his intentions to take Eren for himself. He attempted to take Eren by force but was stopped by Levi Ackerman.
