Kean was born in Southam, Warwickshire, England. He was educated at City of Birmingham College (now University of Birmingham), where he trained to be an actor with acting teacher Michael Ellis. He started his career in the 1970s when he was cast in the TV series "Manor Farm" and the series "The Brothers".
Kean's big break came when he was cast in the role of DCI Reginald Wexford in the long-running ITV police drama "The Bill", which he played from 2000 until December 2011. He has also starred in "My Family", which ran for three series on BBC1 between 2005 and 2007, and he also appeared in "Casualty" in 2009.
Kean lives in Reading with his wife Jane, whom he married in June 2010.
