As a child, he was treated for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but later admitted that his disorder was caused by the constant harassment he had endured at school.
He was admitted to medical school in 2001, but dropped out in 2003 after being assaulted by a fellow medical student. Keita had been the target of repeated harassment over his perceived homosexuality, with subsequent assaults at school. Keita claimed that this was because of his perceived effeminacy.
This is not an uncommon occurrence in Japan, where same-sex behavior is considered to be threatening to the macho culture of the country.
Keita also suffers from diabetes. He has published several books, including "The Art of Being Invisible" and "The Art of Dying". He won the Otsukai Prize for Literature in 2008 for his autobiographical work "The Art of Dying".
He was elected as a member of the House of Representatives of Japan in 2005, representing the Liberal Democratic Party. Keita's campaign platform included the elimination of the Sun-Hwa Hakubutsukan high school, where he had been abused; however, he failed to win election.
