Hazel grew up in New York City and attended Barnard College. After college she interned at a publishing house and then went to work for the American Cancer Society, where she was involved in many aspects of raising money for research and the training of new staff. She was also involved in the hiring of all staff.
But she didn’t like that job very much. “I enjoyed my work,” she says, “but I hated the politics of it. I didn’t like the office politics. It just wasn’t for me. I don’t like that kind of thing at all. I’m not one of those people who enjoys fighting or arguing over things. And I’m not one of those people who enjoys the give-and-take between management and employees. It just wasn’t my cup of tea. I do not like being in organizational politics.
