The premise of the film is pretty simple: The government has been overthrown by a new group of crazies and the world is now run by a virtual reality machine called “The System”. The System is a kind of computer network which runs everything from energy production to communications to transport. It has a personality of its own and will generally ignore anyone who tries to tamper with it. The government fought a war with a rebel group called the Iron Front, and a short time later the System decided that was all over and it would take over the whole world.
In order to maintain control, the System uses a process called “seeding”, which means it takes over people by giving them a personality which fits their characteristics. In Kaneda’s case, he becomes a badass motorcycle gang leader, and in Tetsuo’s case he becomes a psychotic biker punk who kills people just for the hell of it.
Odaiba today is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay, Japan, across the Rainbow Bridge from central Tokyo. Odaiba was initially built in this area for defensive purposes in the 1850s. Reclaimed land offshore Shinagawa was dramatically expanded during the late 20th century as a seaport district, and has developed since the 1990s as a major commercial, residential and leisure area. Daiba formally refers to one district of the island development in Minato Ward.
