The study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, is the first to examine the relationships between personality types and job satisfaction in a large-scale workplace setting.
"The results of the present study suggest that individual differences in personality play a significant role in job satisfaction," said Dr. Jiaxin Shi, from the University of Hong Kong, who led the research. "As such, future research should focus on investigating the structure of job satisfaction and identifying the various dimensions that influence people's job satisfaction."
Researchers recruited 2,140 employees from a large multinational company in China to participate in the study. Participants completed an online questionnaire that measured their personality type, job satisfaction and demographic details. Personality type was assessed using the 'Big Five' model of personality. Job satisfaction was measured using a 10-item questionnaire.
The researchers found that individuals with a high level of 'neuroticism' experience lower job satisfaction than those with a low level of neuroticism. Individuals who experience high levels of 'extraversion' also reported higher levels of job satisfaction than those who experience low levels of extraversion.
