He worked in various businesses and was a promoter of various traveling shows including the circus, the Museum, and the Museum of Natural History. He is remembered for his ability to promote and sell any number of items, and was known for his circus and museum that showcased freaks and curiosities. He is also remembered for his ability to gather a crowd around him, and would attract people to come to see what he had to offer.
Barnum was not the only entertainer of his time to use tricks and shows to make money, however his circus and museum were unique in their ability to draw large crowds. They also attracted the attention of the media, which was becoming more popular at this time. Barnum's fame grew during the Civil War when he was able to obtain a post office with his circus and made himself a spokesman for the Union cause. As a result of this, he was elected to the United States Congress in 1862 by the New York state legislature. He was reelected in 1866 and 1868.
