Hans was a member of the Libertarian Party of Canada until 2004. He was the vice president of the party for over eight years, and was one of the founding members of LPC-Montreal. He then left the party due to what he said were internal problems. He then ran for mayor in the Montreal borough of Ville-Marie under the LPC banner in 2006, finishing last with 1.4% of the vote. He ran again in 2008, finishing fourth with 6.0% of the vote.
Hans was also the leader of the Canadian campaign against the criminalization of poverty, which was co-founded by him and fellow Libertarian Party member/candidate Andrew Manicom.
