When did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I knew I wanted to be a writer in the third grade in Chile. But in Chile in the 40s and 50s it was not possible to express yourself in writing. There was no place to write. So when I became an adult, when I was about 15 or 16, I made up my mind that I would write novels. Another reason why I wrote was because the books I read when I was a teenager left me with such a sense of disgust and such a sense of loss that I felt like I had to write it all down. So, in order to release my feelings, I started writing.
