This is not the first time that Hayat al-Cham, the son of the Syrian president, has been accused of being a member of the Assad family. In December 2013, his name was included in a list of people who he said had recently traveled to visit President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.
Hayat al-Cham is probably more popular among Syrians than his father, who is seen as having led the country into a debris-strewn abyss. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), an anti-Assad opposition group, said that Hayat al-Cham was arrested in May last year. His lawyers said that he was arrested because of his opposition to the Syrian government. They said he was released after two months of detention after his mother intervened on his behalf.
Hayat al-Cham studied engineering at Moscow State Technical University, but he dropped out to join the Syrian army after the outbreak of the Syrian civil war. He is now an adviser to his father’s office.
The Syrian government also has two other sons who are believed to be members of the Assad family.

He is also commander-in-chief of the Syrian Armed Forces, Regional Secretary of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party's branch in Syria. He is a son of Hafez al-Assad, who was President of Syria from 1971 to 2000.
