He rose to power by overthrowing his father, Said bin Taimur, in the 1970 Omani coup d'état with the aim of ending the country's isolation and using its oil revenue for modernization and development. He is the longest-serving leader in the Middle East and Arab world, having held the office since 1970. From 2015, Qaboos suffered from cancer, for which he received treatment.
