    The character was created by writer-director Spike Lee and played by rapper Keith Robinson in the film "Do the Right Thing" (1989), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture of 1989. The win was Lee's second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the only Oscar for a film that was not nominated for Best Picture.

    Spike Lee has said that he based the character on Leon "Ndugu" Yelvington, a Harlem activist and community activist who, in 1994, was convicted of murdering a drug dealer who was attempting to extort money from him by threatening to kill his family. Lee noted that in the film, the characters Rallo and Michael are based on Ndugu, and that Ndugu had been friends with a man named "Big Black" (the character's name in the film) while they were growing up.

    The film also features a character named "Little Black", who is briefly seen as a child in one scene, played by Keith Robinson. The two characters are shown together in a later scene.
