Her family consists of her mother, Kiyomi Sakura, a professional singer; her father, Takashi "Goro" Sakura, a sailor; two older brothers, Chikara and Kazuya; and a younger sister, Erika. Sakura began studying at Central Music School when she was in fourth grade. In high school, Sakura was a member of the Japanese idol band Toyah, where she was the bass guitarist. After graduation from high school in 1995, Sakura attended Sophia University in Tokyo.
