A study of more than 1,000 men and women in their early 20s found that introverts and extroverts can change their personalities over the years, but it's more difficult for introverts to change.

Introverts and extroverts also showed different patterns of brain activity while thinking and processing information and while resting and sleeping, researchers said.
Introverts had more activity in the areas of the brain that process sensory input and memory, while extroverts had more activity in the areas of the brain that process decision-making and problem-solving, the study found.
Introverts also had higher levels of serotonin, a chemical associated with feelings of happiness and well-being, than extroverts, the study found.
The new findings suggest that introverts and extroverts may have different brain structures in areas related to the way they process information, the researchers said.
