He is the founder of the International Shaolin Kempo Federation and the International Shorinji Kempo Association, and has published several books on both subjects. He is also a poet who has published two collections of poetry with Tachyon Publications.

    He has been a student of martial arts since the age of five, when he started studying Tae Kwon Do with his father. He continued to study martial arts throughout his life, and began studying Goju Ryu karate at the age of twenty-two, beginning with a two-year training program from Sensei Ed Scott at the Shorinji Kempo Karate Dojo in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1988, he moved to Japan to train under the tutelage of Shihan Kiyoshi Inoue at the Shorinji Kempo Karate Dojo in Fukuoka, Japan. He received his black belt from Inoue in 1990.

    Derek Stephen Prince is an American voice actor who has played various roles in the Digimon series, the voice of Elgar in the live-action Power Rangers Turbo, and Power Rangers in Space. In the world of anime, he played Keitaro Urashima in Love Hina, DemiDevimon and Piedmon in Digimon, Ken Ichijouji and Veemon in Digimon 02 and Impmon in Digimon Tamers, Uryū Ishida in Bleach, Iggy in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and Shino Aburame in Naruto. In video games, he provides the voice of Vexen in the Kingdom Hearts series as well as the voices of Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu and Kokichi Oma from the Danganronpa series. Derek has been part of the Voice123 roaster since September, 2008. He reprised his role as Ken Ichijouji for YouTuber Aficionados Chris' review of Digimon. Some of the characters he voices are intellectual or brainy, such as Vexen, Uryū, and Kokichi.
