Stewart was raised in a strict, Christian household in the small town of Franklin, North Carolina, where his mother was a schoolteacher and his father a railroad engineer. Stewart did not discover he wanted to be an actor until he was in his mid-teens. His first performance was a stage production of "The Music Man", where he played the part of town drunk Will Parker. He then focused his attention on football; he played running back for the Franklin High School Triangle-Dawgs and was on the team that won the 1980 4A state championship.
After graduating from high school, Stewart attended Reinhardt College for two years, majoring in drama and still finding time to play defensive back on the college football team. He then transferred to N.C. State University on a football scholarship, but after two years, he left the team to pursue acting.
After a few minor roles on the stage, Stewart began to get more noticeable parts in local theater productions. In 1982, he began appearing on shows such as "One Day at a Time" and "The Jeffersons".
