She was very intelligent, with a great deal of wit and humor, and she could be quite ruthless when she needed to be. She was also a very kind person. She never judged anyone by their personal appearance, class or lack of it. She would have been considered a sort of saint by the pre-Victorian people, who were often so cruel to one another.
As the series progressed we saw her become very protective of her brother and her nephew. She really wanted to see them grow up to be decent people. She wanted to see them love and respect others as much as she did. When her brother George died she was devastated, but it was this that changed her into a good person. She encouraged Francis to take up farming after he left the army (she had always hated the idea of him being a soldier).
