Hwang Jang-ho personality type is ISTP, so his father was a US citizen, and his mother a South Korean citizen. As he grew up, he experienced more and more pressure from his parents to succeed academically and to become a doctor. He had an emotional relationship with his father, one that he wished to continue.
He decided that he would be happier at medical school if he could get an American student visa. He applied for a student visa to the US in June of 2011. In the meantime, his father had been diagnosed with cancer. His father wanted to enjoy life and travel before he died. As a result, Hwang made arrangements to sell his house in Gwangju, South Korea, and move to the US. He decided to move to the US in August 2011.
He enrolled in medical school at the University of Wisconsin – Madison, but did not have enough money to pay for tuition or living expenses while he was there. His father agreed to pay for his tuition, but then increased the amount of money he would pay per month. The amount of money he could give Hwang depended on the amount of money that his father already spent on medical treatment.
